One policy for the whole family
A family is usually covered by a single policy: it’s easier to manage and often cheaper than separate policies for each person. An adult can be added later too.
Children: paediatrician and vaccines
A family medical policy includes a paediatrician and specialist appointments. The set of vaccinations depends on the specific policy — worth checking in advance, especially if your child is starting nursery or school.
Pregnancy and childbirth
Pregnancy care and childbirth are covered, but they almost always have a waiting period (carencia) — a few months from the start date. So if you’re planning a baby, take the policy out early.
What else to look at
- No co-payments — if a family member is also applying for residency.
- Clinics nearby — convenient when you have children.
- Doctors’ languages — Tenerife has English-speaking paediatricians.
Tip: take the policy out early — because of waiting periods, some services (childbirth, certain procedures) may not be available immediately on day one.
