Moving to Tenerife is not only sea and sun — it is also a few bureaucratic steps in the first weeks. Knowing the order keeps it calm. We have put together a clear newcomer’s checklist, with an emphasis on what people often forget.

1. NIE — your foreigner number

The NIE (Número de Identidad de Extranjero) is the ID without which you can barely arrange anything in Spain: no bank, no rental contract, no many services. It is one of the first steps.

2. Empadronamiento — registration at the town hall

Registering your address (padrón) at the town hall (ayuntamiento). It is needed for the health card, enrolling children in school and many other procedures. Do it as early as possible.

3. Healthcare and insurance

Here is an important detail people forget:

  • A private policy is needed from the start. For the visa and residency it is mandatory, and in the early period it is your access to doctors while you have no public healthcare.
  • Public healthcare (Seguridad Social) comes later — once you start working or paying social contributions.
  • Doctor and language. With a private policy you can reach a specialist quickly and find a doctor who speaks your language.

Tip: do not leave insurance for later — without it the visa will not be approved, and in the first weeks medical care can be needed at any moment.

4. A bank account

A local account is needed for rent, utilities and everyday spending. To open one they usually ask for the NIE and sometimes the empadronamiento.

5. The rest, depending on your case

  • exchanging or validating your driving licence;
  • enrolling children in school or nursery;
  • rental contract and utilities;
  • mobile and internet.

Where to start with insurance

Health insurance is one of the first items, because it is needed both for the visa and for real life from day one. The cost is calculated individually — by age, family and cover — and the estimate is free and commits you to nothing.
