After 65 the insurance conversation turns uncomfortable: health policies get more expensive, the health declaration becomes a long list, and in places an age limit appears. But there is one area where the picture is different.

Why age makes it harder

Health insurance prices the probability of illness, and that rises with age. Hence the high tariff, the accumulated preexistencias and the caution from insurers.

Accident insurance works differently. It prices the probability of injury, which does not climb as dramatically with age and, more importantly, does not depend on chronic diagnoses. That is why this is where workable options for older ages exist.

What is available after 65

The accident insurance range includes products aimed specifically at older ages. Their defining feature is the absence of medical age loadings: the tariff does not punish you for not being forty.

What is normally covered:

  • a payout on accidental death — money to the family, not to a clinic;
  • compensation for disability, total or partial;
  • related support after the event.

What is not there: treatment of illness. This is not a substitute for a health policy but a different layer of protection.

Why it matters in Tenerife specifically

The most common accident at this age is a fall. Nothing exotic — a staircase, wet tiles by the pool, an uneven pavement in the old town. The consequences are a hip fracture, a long recovery and costs that land on the family.

If the children live in another country, logistics are added: flights, a carer, help around the house. That is exactly what the payouts compensate.

A related option worth looking at is a hospital cash policy: with a fracture and a long stay it works on precisely those costs.

How it fits with everything else

The full picture for someone over 65 usually has three parts:

  1. Medicine — a health policy or the public system, and sometimes Convenio Especial where there is no entitlement to public care.
  2. Accidents — the subject of this article.
  3. Financial protection for the familylife insurance and funeral cover, so costs do not land on the children unexpectedly.

You do not need all of it at once. But it helps to know which layer is covered.

If you are arranging it for parents

A common scenario: adult children live in Tenerife and the parents come for long stays or follow them out. Here what matters is:

  • age limits — up to what age the product can be taken out at all, and up to what age it renews;
  • renewal terms — whether the tariff is repriced sharply;
  • who the beneficiary is and how quickly payment happens;
  • if the parents are still visitors, they also need a policy for arriving in Spain.

Arrange it earlier: the younger the person when the contract starts, the gentler the terms and the wider the choice. This is the one parameter that only gets worse with time.

What next

One input is enough — the age. From there it is clear which products are available and on what terms.
