Not everyone coming to Tenerife needs a residency policy straight away. If you are coming for a short time — as a tourist, on a visit, or to scout before moving — travel insurance fits. Let us look at what it covers and where its limit is.

What travel insurance for coming is

It is a policy for a short stay in Spain. It usually includes:

  • medical assistance for illness or accident during the trip;
  • protection of baggage and belongings;
  • basic travel assistance.

It is a convenient and affordable policy — but for a temporary stay, not for living in the country.

Who it suits

  • Tourists — during a holiday in Tenerife.
  • Visitors — relatives and friends coming for a few days.
  • Those coming to scout before moving — on a reconnaissance trip, without arranging residency.
  • Short work visits without relocating.

How it differs from a residency policy

  • Travel insurance: short term, travel assistance, baggage protection.
  • Residency policy: full healthcare for a year, no copays or waiting periods, with a certificate for the consulate.

They are different tools for different needs. Travel insurance does not qualify for a visa — and conversely, there is no point arranging a yearly policy for a one-week trip.

When to move to a residency policy

As soon as a visa, residency or a move comes into play, travel insurance is no longer enough — you need a full residency policy. If you are at that stage, take a look at our articles on residency insurance and the non-lucrative visa.

Tip: if you are coming to “scout” and already thinking about moving, ask about both options at once — that way you can plan the budget in advance.

How much it costs

Travel policies are usually affordable and depend on the length of the trip and the cover. The exact amount is calculated individually, and the estimate is free and commits you to nothing.
