Island life means flying. Visiting parents, a work trip to the mainland, a holiday, a friend’s wedding — and every time you arrange insurance again, pay again and read the terms again. There is a simpler way.

What a multi-trip policy is

Travel insurance bought for a year and for every trip at once. You pay once, then simply travel: each journey is automatically covered, with nothing to arrange separately.

Cover is standard for a travel policy:

  • medical assistance abroad, with a solid limit — up to 150,000 € in the popular variants;
  • repatriation and medical transport;
  • trip cancellation — compensation for non-refundable costs;
  • baggage — loss, delay, damage.

These policies generally carry no waiting periods: cover works immediately.

When it beats single-trip cover

Simple arithmetic: one week’s cover costs little, but four single policies in a year already approach the price of an annual one. As a guide, from three or four trips a year.

The break-even point depends on where and how long you fly, so price it against your own schedule rather than a general rule.

Who it usually suits:

  • people who regularly fly home — to family, for holidays, on business;
  • remote workers with trips — see also insurance for autónomos;
  • families who manage a holiday, a mainland trip and a visit to relatives within a year;
  • spontaneous travellers — no need to remember about insurance every time.

An underrated benefit: you stop flying uninsured. Single-trip cover is often simply forgotten before a short journey — and that is the journey where things happen.

What to check when choosing

  1. Maximum length of a single trip. The key parameter. An annual policy covers many trips, but each within a set duration.
  2. Geography. Worldwide or by zone; trips to the USA and Canada are often rated separately.
  3. The medical limit and whether repatriation is included.
  4. Cancellation — what counts as a valid reason.
  5. Sport. If you ski or dive on your trips you need a version with active sports cover.
  6. Age limits — not present on every variant, but worth checking.

What it is not

A multi-trip policy is insurance for travel, not a health policy for living in Spain. It will not do:

If instead you are only about to arrive in Spain, what you need is a policy for new arrivals.

What next

Work out how many trips you made last year and how long the longest one was. Those two numbers are enough to tell whether the annual option pays.
