If you already live legally in Spain, the next logical step is to bring your loved ones over. For that there is the family reunification visa (reagrupación familiar). One of the mandatory items is health insurance for each arriving relative. Let us look at the requirements.

What family reunification is

Reagrupación familiar allows a Spanish resident to bring their family to join them. Usually this means:

a spouse or registered partner;
minor children (your own or under guardianship);
dependent parents, under certain conditions.

The resident applicant proves sufficient income, housing and legal status, and arranges several documents for those arriving — including a health policy.

The insurance requirement

full cover (sin copagos) — no copays;
no waiting periods — cover from day one;
for the whole year and across all of Spain;
with a certificate for immigration and the consulate.
