Tenerife attracts not only those moving for good but also students: universities, language schools, exchange programmes. If you are coming to study for more than three months, you will need a student visa — and with it, the right health insurance. Let us look at the requirements.
When you need a student visa
A student visa is required to study in Spain for more than 90 days — whether at a university, college or long language courses. One of the mandatory documents is a private health policy.
The insurance requirement
For a student visa the consulate requires a policy meeting the same strict conditions as for residency:
- full cover (sin copagos) — no copays for appointments or procedures;
- no waiting periods — cover from day one;
- for the whole study period and across all of Spain;
- with a certificate for the consulate confirming these conditions.
Particularities for students
- Duration = study duration. The policy is arranged for the whole visa period; if you extend your studies, you extend the insurance too.
- Age and price. For young students policies are usually affordable — a plus.
- Language courses. If the course is longer than 90 days and a student visa is arranged, the policy requirements are the same as for university study.
Tip: arrange the policy in advance so the certificate is ready when you submit documents — it is a common cause of delays.
Common mistakes
- Taking a travel policy — it will not be accepted for a student visa.
- Saving on a policy with copays — the application may be refused.
- Leaving it to the last minute — better to do it early.
